Crap That Jess Has Been Watching On YouTube! – Jess has pulled out another of her favourites, this time with the somewhat misleading title of "Kick the PJ". While she struggles to maintain some decorum in her segment Bill finds ways to work out what the hell she is on about.

APCC Under 11 Golds: Round 10 vs Kiama White

There are a lot of distractions around at this time of year. Kids go on school holidays, Christmas is approaching, Steve Smith is looking at another Test century, and parents have no time to juggle everything going on. And yet, despite this, the Albion Park Gold Under 11 team has stuck together, fought hard, and won their fourth consecutive match, a wonderful effort heading into the mid-season break.

Finally getting a chance to play a game at the Home of Albion Park Junior Cricket at Con O’Keefe Oval against Kiama White, skipper Lucas Brown won the toss and stuck with a winning formula in electing to bowl first. It was a warm muggy morning, and it appeared that it was difficult to retain concentration on the game going on in front of the kids. While some of the things done in the field were good and excellent for the age group, there are still some things that are basic errors that keep being repeated, something we are trying to improve on as a team. Unfortunately, the humidity seemed to affect the brainwaves at times and some chances went begging. Lucas took a great catch off Josh’s bowling, the only downside being that it was the only no ball Josh bowled all morning. Blake took a great catch at keeper off Charlotte’s bowling, which was celebrated with vigour by all. There were also two run outs, a brilliant direct hit from side on at mid on by Max Sciberras that found the runner just short, in what was the best piece of fielding of the season so far, while Lucas and Blake combined for a run out at the keepers end. Like I said, some of the fielding was excellent, and some not quite so much.

Blake Ison bowled better today but is still having trouble with his run up and length of bowling. His four overs brought him figures of 1/10. Lucas Brown too missed some opportunities by not bowling straight enough but he again bowled well, his three overs finishing with 1/6. Kane Rex had a bit of trouble with his action today, which had the ball moving further down the leg side than usual. His three overs were economical again for 0/10. Max Sciberras bowled better today, and found the straight green stuff on a much more regular basis. His three overs gave him excellent figures of 0/7. Josh Peters, apart from the afore-mentioned no ball, bowled his usual excellent line and length, and finished with 0/4 from his three overs. Charlotte Rodda was excellent again today, and she appears to have found her rhythm. Her two overs brought her the terrific finish of 1/11. Bohdie Rodda is still having a bit of trouble getting his arm past his right ear, but a little practice over the break will do him the world of good. He finished with 0/12 from his two overs.

Kiama White finished their 20 overs at five wickets for 67 runs.

The batting order was tweaked a little for the final game, with Lucas opening with Max. Lucas continued his great improvement with the bat this season, with his strokes along the ground streaking away to the boundary, while his shots in air almost costing him his wicket. Hopefully he will see what works best without being reminded, but his 14 runs was a good reward. He was well supported by Max who, though he only scored 1 run, he wasn’t dismissed and he ran well for his partner. Charlotte and Bohdie both didn’t score a run off the bat, but did their job by seeing off some good bowling from the Kiama team and being solid in their partnerships. Kane started off looking to hit the ball too hard and looking at the sky, but once he adjusted and watched the ball and hit through the ball, he hit two terrific boundaries in his 10 runs. Blake recovered after his tough week last week, and with Josh at the end put the finishing touches on the innings. Blake’s 25 runs included four boundaries, while Josh’s 16 runs included two fours of his own, and both looked to maximise their runs with some… interesting running between the wickets. At the end of their innings Albion Park finished at three wickets for 112 runs.

With wicket penalties added, Albion Park Gold won the match with 132 runs to Kiama White’s 79.

The kids had great support from parents of both teams and the match was played in a great spirit. Once again thanks to all of the parents and grandparents who show up each week, because it’s you that the kids want to do well for. Special thanks again to Matt Ison who takes the scorebook every week and makes a difficult job much easier for everyone.

With the Under 11’s competition to be regraded, it looks as though both Albion Park Under 11 teams will play in the A graded competition after Christmas. This will be a good challenge for the Gold team, as they will play much tougher and older teams than they have in recent weeks, and it will be a good indication as to their improvement they are making in every game.

Cheers to all families, players and supporters of the Albion Park Cricket Club for the Xmas and New Year break, and we look forward to resuming hostilities in 2018.

Until then, GO EAGLES!

APCC Under 11 Golds: Round 9 vs Lake Illawarra

One of the most pleasing things as a junior coach is watching a team coming to believe in themselves, and beginning to realise their own potential and ability to win games. Much could be said in this regard to the Albion Park Under 11 Golds team, who once again played a terrific match to bring up their third consecutive victory over Lake Illawarra at Dawes Park at Barrack Point this morning.

Lake Illawarra won the toss and elected to bat, which excited the Albion Park team who now believe this is part of their winning formula. What was more important was that they bowled and fielded well, and for the most part this was the case. Our keepers today were Lucas Brown and Blake Ison, who both did an excellent job. They were tasked by the coach today to try to allow zero byes in the innings, a task they completed, which was important in helping to keep the pressure on the batsmen. Blake’s two overs were both maidens which gave him the figures of 0/0, while Lucas came on for his two overs late, and took two wickets in his final over, including yet another caught and bowled for which he is becoming an expert at. The young Malcolm Marshall finished with 2/6.

Kane “The Destroyer” Rex was the star once again, because he tends to listen to the coach who implores his bowlers to bowl straight, and wickets will come. Kane once again generally stuck to this task, picking up a wicket in each of his first three overs, and had the chance to take more with a fourth over, but he got a little tired and probably tried a little hard. His figures of 3/14 were again a fine reward for hard work and never giving up. Josh Peters continues to tie up all of the batsmen with his big turning leg spin, and changes in pace and trajectory. His 1/3 from three overs was again impressive. Charlotte Rodda’s first over was a bit nervous, but she followed it up with probably he two best overs she has bowled this season. She bowled only three no balls in those last two overs, and she was extremely unfortunate not to pick up a wicket. Her pressure did create a run out which was terrific. She finished with 0/12 from three overs and should be proud of her effort. Max Sciberras bowled three good overs, only falling foul of bowling wide when he tried a bit too hard to get a wicket. When he stayed solid to his technique the ball came out well, and finished with 0/13. Bohdie Rodda had a day he’d rather forget, but if he practices his bowling at home every afternoon he will continue to improve.

There were three excellent run outs today, one from Josh who picked up the ball and ran it in to the stumps to beat the batsman, while there were two direct run outs from great throws by Kane and Lucas. This was balanced by five catches being dropped which was a little disappointing, by all five catches actually went to hand before being dropped, so the kids made good efforts to take them. At the end of the 20 overs, Lake Illawarra had scored 9/67.

The same batting line up once again launched the Eagles kids assault on the total, and once again openers Lucas and Bohdie batted through the opening partnership without losing a wicket, a sterling effort. In an innings difficult to score with few deliveries available to play strokes at, Bohdie again looked good for his 1, while Lucas improves every week with the bat and the responsibility by scoring 10 with two boundaries. Kane looked good again, and even played a perfect defensive shot, which is the best way to show everyone he is taking on the lessons of training. He only made 2 today but it was the way he batted that was impressive. Well done Kane. Charlotte again looked terrific with the bat, playing out Lake’s best and fastest bowler with aplomb. Once she is confident enough to start calling and running for runs on her own she is going to start making some good scores.

It was tough at the end of the innings with some of the kids beginning to get tired in the field and with the ball. Blake was a bit distracted with the bat today and couldn’t get going like he usually does which obviously frustrated him. His 5 runs would have been more on a normal day. Max batted well again under difficult circumstances, none more difficult than being sold up the river by his batting partner when Josh called him through for a run that wasn’t his call and left Max terribly stranded. Suffice to say Josh will be reminded of this for some time. Max finished with 2, while Josh, apart from his calling, batted well again to finish on 13. Albion Park’s total was 3/83 off their 20 overs, with the most impressive part being the loss of only three wickets, and two of those being run out. It shows that their defensive techniques are beginning to tighten up which is good to see.

With wicket penalties added, Albion Park Gold ran out winners over the younger Lake Illawarra team by 119 to 79.

With one game to go before Xmas the Golds will be looking to continue their impressive improvement. But it looks as though a good dose of fielding practice – especially catching – will be on the cards this Wednesday.

APCC Under 11 Golds: Round 8 vs Kiama Gold

In cricket there is the old saying “One bring two!” which generally refers to getting a quick second wicket after securing the first. This weekend, “One brings two!” refers to the Albion Park Under 11 Gold cricket team, who notched their second win for the season as well as their second win in succession in their match against Kiama Gold at beautiful Gainsborough Chase in Kiama Downs.

Skipper Max Sciberras won the toss and elected to field on a humid morning, which to be quite honest seemed to affect their efforts. The concentration levels were down, the energy wasn’t there and there seemed to be a lot of statue standing in the field. And that was just the coach at the bowlers end. The conditions didn’t help but it felt as though the team had switched off a little after last week’s win, and they were fortunate not to suffer a bit more on the scoreboard for it. Looks like it’s back to fielding training this Wednesday.

Despite this, much of the bowling was excellent. Skipper Max and Kane Rex shared the wicket keeping duties for the day, and did a good job considering both got a couple of tough bounces. Kane bowled two overs for 9 runs, but did not bowl a no ball which was an excellent effort to go with his three wickets last week. He took on board the lessons from training which was excellent. Max bowled two overs for 7 runs, and also picked up his first wicket with the ball, clean bowled. An exciting moment in everyone’s career, and his teammates were excited for him. Well done Max! Charlotte Rodda followed up her good spell from last week with two overs for 9 runs, while Bodhie Rodda couldn’t quite get the motor running today, with his two overs costing 13 runs.

Blake Ison is still mixing his deliveries up a bit, he probably needs to be running a bit harder through the crease to get his mojo back. You can’t argue with his figures though, taking 1/3 from his four overs. The speedster Lucas Brown got taken for four off his first delivery, but was again superb after that, finishing with 2/7 from four overs, and if only he bowled more than two deliveries at the stumps he would get a lot more wickets. And I know I sound biased, but Albion Park have got a pretty fair leg spinner on their hands in a few years, as Josh Peters improved on last week to deliver another great spell. He finished with 1/6 from four overs. At the end of the innings, Kiama Gold had scored 5/64 from their twenty overs.

With last week’s success we decided to keep the same batting order, to help the kids get to know their partner and hopefully improve the understanding between them in their batting and running between the wickets. And this seemed to be successful. Bodhie was unfortunate to firstly be run out for not getting back into his crease fast enough and to be nailed by a throw from the outfield on the arm, but apart from that run out he and Lucas once again were not dismissed as the opening batting partnership and got the team off to a great start. Bodhie once again improved on his highest ever score, which is now 5, and Lucas made double figures for his highest ever score of 14, and their calling and running was excellent. Well done to both boys. Kane also made his highest ever score of 6, but was dismissed a couple of times, though once we get that defense tightened up he will be scoring a lot more. One off drive in particular that he hit today was fantastic. Charlotte Rodda showed her patience and defense once again, bating through her innings for 0 but not being dismissed, and running well for her partners.

The excellent top half of the innings allowed the bottom half to do their job without any pressure. Max made a solid 4 runs this week, and could have made a few more had he set off for runs a bit earlier. No doubt he’ll get those next week. Blake batted well again for his 18 runs, with many more there for the taking if he can put out of his mind the previous shot and concentrate on the next ball. Josh continued on from last week’s good innings to post his best score this season with 21. It all added up to a terrific total of 4/109, with an excellent 68 of those runs off the bat.

After penalties were added, the final scores were Kiama Gold 80 to Albion Park Gold 129, and a victory to the Eagles by 49 runs.

It is pleasing to see the improvement in these kids every week, each and every one of them. Winning is nice too, so hopefully we can continue to do the right things at training and then bring them into the game on Saturday. Thanks again to all of the families who show up to watch them play every Saturday, the kids appreciate being able to play well for you as well.

And remember – two brings three!

Songs of My Life #69 - Iron Maiden - Purgatory - 1981

Songs of My Life #69 - Iron Maiden - Purgatory - 1981

This is one of those songs that gets lost in the amazing career of Iron Maiden, but it has always been a favourite of mine. From the back half of the Killers album, it showcases how amazing this band was, and the talent they had to become as big as they would within just a couple of years.

Listen to Paul Di'Anno's amazing vocals here - after all of these years it still suits this album perfectly. The twin guitars of Murray and Smith are awesome here, as well as the rifling bass guitar of Steve Harris. That magnificent gunning in this song is tremendous. And not to mention the brilliant drumming of Clive Burr. Magnificent.

Like I said it's not one of their most well known songs, even though it was released as a single. But it still carries a lot of weight today in so many ways. It still reminds me of our Year 11 Study Skills camp at Fitzroy Falls, when Killers was played over and over in our dorm room.

APCC Under 11 Golds: Round 7 vs Kookas Blue

WINNERS!

After three games, two washouts and a bye, the Albion Park Under 11 Golds have broken their duck and brought up their first victory over the Kooka Blue team at King Memorial Oval this morning.

Captain Josh Peters won the toss and elected to field on a muggy morning. The aim of the day was to eliminate no balls and to bowl at the stumps in order to get more wickets that the team has been doing. And most pleasing was that this was exactly what the team did.

Lucas Brown has comfortably moved into the role as new ball bowler, and excelled again today, at one stage being on a hat-trick. If he has bowled straighter he could have finished with anything, but his four overs brought him great figures of 2/10. Blake Ison began with a wicket with his first delivery, but wasn’t quite able to follow up after that. He tried a bit too hard in his last over, and finished it off with two front foot no-balls, which are not only unusual in Under 11’s cricket, but his last one cost him when he also bowled the batsman on strike. Lesson learned? His figures of 1/9 from four overs was also excellent. Josh Peters bowled as good a spell of leg spin bowling as you can for a ten year old. He had three balls that bounced an inch over the middle stump and he consistently beat the batsmen for spin. He will be lucky to get another wicket this season but his coach will be happy if he bowls like that. His four overs finished with 0/5.

Kane Rex took what he learned from training on Wednesday and executed it perfectly today, bowling straight and generally on a better length. He bowled two batsmen, and also got his third wicket by a great catch by wicket-keeper Max Sciberras who showed good awareness to get to the ball. Kane finished with 3/8 from his three overs which was just what the team was looking for, Great stuff. Max kept well, and bowled one over for seven runs before he took over the gloves. The other keeper was Bodhie Rodda who also did a good job behind the stumps, and finished with 0/4 from his one over, but his final ball was a peach, and if he can continue to bowl like that he will improve out of sight. Charlotte Rodda was terrific, bowling her best spell of the season so far, with most of her deliveries straight, only bowling six no balls, and picking up her first wicket of the season from a great catch by Lucas Brown at point. Her three overs produced the figures of 1/10, which was wonderful to watch. She should be very proud of her efforts.

At the end of the innings, the Kookas had made 65 runs for 9 wickets lost, and the chance was there for the Eagles kids to force a victory. Those nine wickets – a seasons best - had included two excellent run outs again, and the fielding again was good, though it dropped a little in the morning heat. There was also only 25 no balls, another season’s best. Improvement in stages.

Lucas and Bodhie opened the batting and their partnership was terrific. They ran hard between the wickets, looked for ones and twos, and both also hit the ball well. Lucas equalled his highest score of 9, and will beat that once he takes his practise from the nets into the game. Bodhie improved his highest score again, scoring a very impressive 3 runs, but the opening partnership didn’t lose a wicket which was just the way the team needed to begin. This start was slightly hampered by losing four wickets in the last three overs before drinks, which brought the game back to level pegging at 5/35. No doubt training on running and calling between the wickets could be coming up shortly.

Kane hit some nice shots in his innings of 3 today, and though he was disappointed today he shouldn’t be. A straight bat will improve his output. Charlotte also made 3 runs today which equalled her highest score from the first game. Blake Ison again batted well, hitting the ball nicely and playing much straighter today for his 14 runs.

With the game in the balance, the final partnership between Max and Josh got the team home. Max came out full of beans and confidence, and was immediately hitting the ball into the gaps and running hard. He made his highest score today with 10 runs and also wasn’t dismissed. His straight pull for four down the ground was the shot of the day. Josh also hit the ball well with four boundaries, and if he stops looking at the sky instead of the ball he’ll even make a few more. His 20 at number seven helped to secure the team the win despite the constant nerves of the coach at square leg, with the score finishing at 100 for seven wickets lost.

With penalties added, the final scores were Kookas Blue 9/93 and Albion Park Gold 7/136. It was a good game from both teams, played in the right spirit and was hard fought throughout. Well down to the Eagles Gold kids, it was a win that was deserved through the hard work that has gone in at training.

Let’s hope we can continue to improve and perhaps get another win up before the Xmas break. In honour of the victory I am going to have a beer for each of the seven of you. No, you know what? I’m going to have TWO for each of you!

APCC Under 11 Golds: Round 3 vs Shellharbour White

Round 3 for the Albion Park Cricket Club Under 11 Gold team was an away trip to Pioneer Park to play the Shellharbour White team, and despite another loss there was a lot of terrific and exciting things to happen for the side.

Captain Kane Rex won the toss, elected to bat and also decided to elevate himself to the opening position – no need for a coaches input. The team batted their 20 overs for a score of 5/78, three less wickets than last week, a good improvement. Kane scored five runs in a good partnership with Blake Ison who scored 18 runs. Josh Peters continued his good form from last week to post 15 runs, and played what his coach though was the shot of the day – a forward defensive stroke to a ball on the stumps. Perhaps he’s learning.

The best partnership of the day came from Max Sciberras and Bohdie Rodda, who not only ran well together but played some lovely strokes. Max’s back foot cover drive was an absolute delight in his total of 4, and Bohdie doubled his highest ever score from just last week, scoring 2. Lucas Brown was unfortunate in that he hit several shots right out of the middle and along the ground, but straight to fieldsmen. His 2 deserved a lot more. At the tail Charlotte Rodda also looked solid and was not afraid to get behind the ball, and also played a couple of nice straight drives. It is good to see the improvement in these kids each week, especially in their calling and running between the wickets. No mix ups today, and lots of good fast singles.

Against a strong Shellharbour White batting line up, who scored 4/114, the Albion Park Gold kids never gave in, and did some marvellous things. Kane Rex managed to get a wicket where the batsman had edged the ball above his head, yet as the pair were completing the run the ball had bounced and spun back onto the wickets for the batsman to be dismissed bowled. Not many people have seen that before, and I’m dubious they will see it again soon. Lucas Brown pulled off a stunning caught and bowled, the catch being taken with the ball already past him and over his head, and taking it one handed. A beauty.

The fielding was superb, and almost makes you believe that training actually works. But it only works if the kids buy into it and make it their mantra, and these seven have done that magnificently. Each time the ball was hit they chased after it hard, the keeper ran to the stumps, the bowler ran to their wickets, and the fielders backed. Today there was no overthrows, there was two almost-direct-hit throws by Kane and Max that would have been out, and two excellent run outs in the same over, the first one from Kane to Bohdie and the second from Blake to Josh. The ground fielding today was a treat to watch. Three tough catches were grassed, two off Josh’s leg spin bowling, but it was also impressive to see the bowlers beginning to get edges to balls, Kane, Blake and Max especially.

With penalties added the final score was Shellharbour White 134 to Albion Park Gold 94, but the game didn’t feel that far apart. Catching practice and eliminating so many no balls are still the aims for next week. Once again the parents support on the sidelines was loud and positive, and hopefully we can reward them win a win soon.

APCC Under 11 Golds: Round 2 vs Gerringong Green

Round Two for the Albion Park Cricket Club Under 11 Golds took place at the picaresque Kevin Irvine Oval in Jamberoo, and home game for the team that seems to have a worldwide plethora of home grounds. Up against the Gerringong Green team that had won their first-round match comfortably, it was important for the Golds to continue to improve in order to compete. Today’s skipper Blake Ison tossed the coin and Gerringong called correctly and elected to bat first.

It was immediately obvious that the team’s bowling was a better standard than the first round. Both Charlotte Rodda and Bodhie Rodda were excellent today, getting most of their deliveries straight down the wicket, giving the batsmen the ability to have to play shots against them. Charlotte especially bowled three or four good deliveries that caused some problems. Well done! Max Sciberras bowled four excellent overs today, including his first maiden over, and though he didn’t manage to snare a wicket he showed much better poise in the popping crease. Blake Ison is beginning to realise what it takes to get wicket, that is it line and length and not necessarily speed that is the key. He took two wickets in his second over today by doing precisely that, with full straight deliveries that beat the batsmen and crashed into their stumps. Great stuff. He also took the wicket-keeping gloves for the second half of the innings and make some good stops, and almost always was watching when the bowler bowled the ball. Almost. Kane Rex kept for the first ten overs and did well, getting a couple of balls that bounced deviously through him. He bowled well again, and also picked up a wicket through full straight bowling. Josh Peters again raised some questions from the batsmen about his pace, but he is yet to realise that you can’t bowl batsmen out if you bowl a great line a foot outside off stump.

The superstar with the ball today was Lucas Brown, who bowled perhaps the best spell of bowling from a player in this team from the last two seasons. He bowled four overs, including two maidens, and finished with 1/5 – but also did not bowl a single wide or no ball. The batsmen had to play at every delivery, and he certainly deserved more wickets for his efforts. In one over he bowled the perfect leg cutter that left the batsman prodding at fresh air, and flowed it up with the perfect off cutter that crashed into the batsman’s pads, and received a silent appeal for LBW from the standing umpire. Great stuff from Lucas, it truly was a terrific spell of bowling.

Gerringong Green finished with 4/72 from their 20 overs, and now the Park team had to find enough runs to pass them. The innings was given a great platform to build on by Charlotte and Bodhie Rodda who opened up the innings. Charlotte batted through her innings without being dismissed, a great effort, and while Bodhie was dismissed once, he did score his first run in organised cricket, which got a great cheer from the crowd.

The middle order had some work to do but made a great fist of it. Blake Ison strode tot the crease and tried to play immediately as he had finished last week, and as a result was trying to hit the ball too hard. Once he realised his error he played some very nice strokes once again, again penetrating the field and finishing with 16 runs. Kane Rex also started out trying too hard to hit the ball hard, but also played well once he readjusted. His innings total came from one stroke, but it was a lovely drive that brought it up, and he is improving quickly. Josh Peters played perhaps his best innings, choosing the right ball to punch through the field and which to defend stolidly. He also called and ran well between wickets, and his 15 runs without being dismissed better showed his promise. Lucas Brown joined in the fun, running well and playing the ball nicely into gaps for singles in his innings of 9. There were a couple of… let’s say… mix ups… in the running between Lucas and Max, but on each occasion, they both survived. Somehow. Max played one terrific late drive for four to third man which went with power, and his innings of 8 runs was another good step forward for him.

With three overs to go the scores had tightened up. A couple of late wickets proved the difference, and Park’s final score of 8/69 from their 20 overs actually lines up well with the Gerringong score. With penalty runs added for wickets for both teams, Gerringong ran out winners 104 to 85.

The team all improved today from last week, which was most pleasing. Their fielding was very much improved, and the excellent pick-ups, throws and backing up showed that you can put good training into play in the weekend games if the kids want to do it.

Practice this week will focus on straight bowling. Cutting down the number of no balls delivered will give the team a better chance to force a victory, hopefully as soon as next week. A big thanks to all of the parents and siblings who showed up again at the game, hearing the cheers and support is a lift for the coach, so it can only be even better for the kids themselves.
