Songs of My Life #43 - Foo Fighters - Everlong - 1997

Songs of My Life #43 - Foo Fighters - Everlong.

Out of the ashes of Nirvana came Foo Fighters, with Dave Grohl emerging from behind the drum kit to be the frontman and guitarist in what he labelled as wanting to be a 'loud guitar band'. What it became was a phenomenon, coming from the eponymously titled debut album on which Dave wrote and played every instrument, to the amazing follow up The Colour and the Shape, which would rank very highly in my Best Albums of All Time list.

Through the many other brilliant and varied tracks on the album, this has always been the stand out. "Everlong" is a genius track, from the mellow opening into the raucous guitar driven by the amazing 16/4 drum beat and the heartfelt lyrics throughout. Along with the terrific film clip - another in the long list of great clips the band does - this song is as powerful 20 years later (and that in itself is ridiculous, that this album is twenty years old!) as it was when it was released.

* Note: "Hey, Johnny Park!" does run a very close second. Awesome track.
